Sports Medicine
At CORE Medical & Surgery Center we’re dedicated to improving our patients’ quality of life and helping them realize their full potential through the maximum development and integration of body, mind, and spirit.
Sports medicine is a medical specialty that studies the effects of physical exercise and sports on the human body, from the point of view of the prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries.
Sports medicine itself is a very broad scientific branch. This specialty includes sports traumatology, where not only blows, sprains and other injuries caused during a competition or practice of a sport are treated, but also injuries caused by overuse due to misuse or overload. Thus, this specialty is responsible for the care, advice, diagnosis and treatment necessary to practice sports safely.
Our Sports Medicine Physicians
Our primary care sports medicine physicians have experience in the treatment of acute and degenerative joint injuries, knee arthroscopy, injuries to the musculoskeletal system generated by professional and amateur sports practice, limb fractures, and joint replacements
Our team has worked as the medical service of the Cruz Azul Football Team, Club Atlético Morelia, Frontón México and our orthopedic director was president of the Medical Commission of the Mexican Football Federation.
We understand that careful evaluation and consideration of biomechanical and ergonomic issues are paramount in the successful management of any chronic or ongoing malady. In addition to working with musculoskeletal injuries, our physicians also have experience in medical conditions related to sports and athletic performance, including
- Heart disease
- Asthma
- Traveler’s diarrhea
- Anemia
- Osteoporosis
- Steroids and performance enhancing aids
- Banned substances by the USOC and NCAA
- Concussions and head injuries.
With the current increased appreciation of head injuries in sports, our physicians are often sourced as experts by different programs as well as the media.
What Is Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine encompasses the following areas:
- Diagnosis and treatment of injuries and illnesses.
- Medical examination before starting a sport, to detect any alteration that could be worsened by the practice of that sport and prevent injury.
- Medical performance research to assess the exertional capacity of the heart, circulation, respiration, metabolism, and the musculoskeletal system.
- Specific functional assessment for the type of sport.
- Medical advice on lifestyle and nutrition.
- Medical assistance in the development of optimal training methods.
- Scientific control of training.
Another group of people who can benefit from physical activity are those who suffer from diabetes, hypertension, heart problems since they can carry out monitored exercise in a controlled environment which will result in physical improvement which over time can help reduce drug doses.
Maximizing Sports Performance
Another function of sports medicine is the proper evaluation of the athlete’s abilities when practicing their sport. Parameters such as maximum oxygen consumption, reaction times, anaerobic power, and lung capacity among others are evaluated. The results obtained in the previous tests are compared against the parameters established by sports organizations such as CONADE to be able to know what the athlete’s weak points are and thus strengthen them to obtain sporting success.
Sports nutrition helps us to dose food, vitamins, minerals, supplements and sports drinks in the best way and when they are required. Food acts as fuel for the body and proper orientation and nutritional planning helps to obtain surprising results in sports practice, in addition to helping the prevention and treatment of chronic degenerative diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, osteoporosis, cholesterol and triglycerides among others.

Early Detection of Sports Injuries
In sports medicine, the prevention and timely detection of disorders of the musculoskeletal system is of great importance, in order to initiate early treatment and avoid more serious sports injuries. Which in turn, helps to have a faster recovery and a better return to sport.
Physicians specializing in sports medicine are trained to identify sports injuries with a discussion, exploration and use of complementary studies, for early identification, characteristics and severity of injuries. In the consultation, a clinical history is made, where it is sought to know all the details of the injury mechanism such as direct impact, flexion or forced rotation, pain when starting a run or throwing objects, or if the pain caused the suspension of physical activities.
In addition to the discussion, the specialist doctor will carry out a physical examination with maneuvers and specific functional tests to identify the type of injury, depending on each area of the body. For example, special tests are carried out in the knee to identify if there is a meniscus injury, anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament or patella dislocation.
With the clinical history, physical examination, signs, symptoms, and functional tests, the sports doctor will be able to diagnose sports injuries. In some cases, complementary studies will have to be requested to diagnose and corroborate the sports injury.
Radiography is used in case of suspected bone or joint injury. In some cases with a history of a contusion or sprain, in which a fracture or joint dislocation is suspected, X-rays will be requested to confirm or rule out the injury.
In case the doctor suspects an injury to soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, or ligaments, the use of ultrasound or MRI may be requested. With these studies it will be possible to observe:
- The location: muscle belly, insertion or origin of the tendon or ligament.
- The size and severity of the injury, from small or partial tears that can be managed without surgery, to complete tears of ligaments, tendons or muscles that require surgical treatment.
In addition, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most used study to diagnose shoulder tendon injuries, intra-articular ruptures of the knee such as meniscus, cartilage and anterior cruciate ligament injuries, as well as lumbar spine injuries in intervertebral discs.
Sports Surgery
Sports injuries are becoming more and more common. Proper diagnosis and treatment aimed at restoring function are the goals of this surgical specialty. Surgery and sports medicine is a subspecialty (high specialty) performed by orthopedists and traumatologists, focused on injuries that are most commonly suffered by casual or professional athletes, with medical, pharmacological, arthroscopic surgical, open surgical and physical therapy management.
Surgeries for sports injuries may address:
- Bone, muscle-tendon and joint injuries
- Spinal and / or limb problems
- Traumatological and orthopedic surgical interventions
Arthroscopic Surgical Treatment for Sports Injuries
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure performed on joints, to diagnose and treat joint injuries. Small incisions are made (less than 1cm), and a tube-shaped camera is inserted, allowing direct visualization of the structures within the joint. This technique allows repairs to be made without the need for large incisions. Patients also have less inflammation and post-surgical pain, which allows a better recovery and faster start of physical therapy.
Arthroscopic surgery is used mainly on the knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle and wrist. It allows treatment of ruptured ligaments, tendons, cartilage or fractures.
