Our Director of Bariatrics, Dr. Gilberto Ungson, is one of the most renowned bariatric surgeons in Mexico. His specialty is General Surgery, with a Digestive Surgery subspecialty. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) reported that of the 252,000 bariatric surgeries in 2018 in the United States, 15.4% were revision surgeries.

30% of gastric sleeve patients need to undergo revision surgery (revision, conversion or reversal), reoperation (diagnostic/therapeutic laparoscopy, cholecystectomy, internal and abdominal wall hernias) or non-surgical in-hospital management (readmission).

Failed bariatric surgery can occur in any type of procedure that is performed for the management of morbid obesity. If you report insufficient weight loss, weight gain, or recurrence of disease, you may be a candidate for a second reoperation.

Revision surgery is more complex than the first obesity surgeries, which have a slightly higher rate of complications, and therefore must be performed by teams with extensive experience. Even so, the failure rate is low when the patient has been well studied, the type of operation correctly chosen and the patient follows the recommendations indicated. This type of bariatric surgery combines restrictive techniques, such as gastric sleeve, with malabsorptive benefits, such as gastric bypass, to facilitate weight loss. This technique removes 85% percent of the stomach, restricting the amount of food you can eat.

Duodenal switch surgery has been shown to offer greater results in weight loss and BMI reduction during the first year prior to surgery compared to gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and adjustable gastric banding. It also has the best chance of resolving type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and reflux compared to the surgeries mentioned above. Also, because of how the stomach is reshaped, there is a lower risk of digestive complications compared to other techniques.

If you have a BMI of 60 or more or if you suffer from health problems related to obesity such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia or type 2 diabetes that are difficult to control, you may be a candidate for this procedure. If you underwent a first bariatric surgery and regained weight or your illnesses returned, the duodenal switch may be your best alternative.
